On April 13th, 2023, I had the opportunity to visit the RAE wind testing tunnels at Farnborough. These tunnels were used to test the aerodynamics of various objects, from aircraft to cars.

The historic Wind Tunnels at Farnborough are some of the few remaining buildings from the world-famous Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE). Saved from demolition by FAST and given listed status, these magnificent buildings were at the forefront of aerodynamic research and development from the early 1930s until 1994.

One of the most impressive features of the site was the 24ft wind tunnel. This large tunnel was capable of generating wind speeds of up to 200mph, allowing for accurate testing of even the largest aircraft.

In addition to the 24ft wind tunnel, there was also a smaller wooden wind tunnel on site. This tunnel was used for testing smaller objects and prototypes.

During my visit, I was able to take several photographs of the site. These photos show the impressive scale of the wind tunnels and the advanced technology that was used to operate them.

Unfortunately, the wind tunnels at Farnborough were closed in 1994. However, my visit to the site was still an incredible experience. The advanced technology and skilled engineers that once worked at the site helped to push the boundaries of aerodynamics and improve the safety and efficiency of aircraft and other vehicles.
